Reflection #5

Some say that there are two ways to look at service. One is the 'hero' model, here the volunteer feels like a hero for helping someone less fortunate than they are. In the end they feel like a very good person because they helped out and they want to tell other people about this. Another way to look at service is as a 'win-win' situation. In this situation the volunteer and the people/organization that they help receive beneficial things. The volunteer can help out and maybe get credit hours for school, the group they help also gets needed work done. What model do you like the best and why?

Reflection #6

Think back to all the service you have done this summer (way back to the fourth of July) What trip is most memorable for you? Which trip did you feel like you did the most to help someone else?

I felt that the most memorable trip was the seniors ice cream social. it was nice to help set up chairs for them to watch the concert and serve them ice cream. We also handed out crossword puzzles and talked to them, but the most memorable part was seeing Nick in the "Mario the Miner" costume tripping over himself and running into walls.

i felt that the most memorable trip this summer was to project CURE. I definitely wouldn't
think of it as my most favorite but they're main focus is awesome. It feels great to help with the assistance of providing much needed medical equipment to countries who have so few pairs of gloves they have to re use them several times for different patients. You know another good thing about project CURE?? you score some free bread. who doesn't like a carb overload??

I like the hero model because you are not doing it for yourself, but for the sake of the planet and other people. A win-win situation is ok, but is just as much for your sake as the people you are doing it for. you should do it because you want to, not for something of your own.

I feel that that on the trip to the CURE warehouse in Centennial, I felt like I was helping a lot. I will remember this trip because I felt like I was making a difference to some people in the world. Even though on this trip I couldn't save everyone, I am glad I was able to help give a child somewhere else in the world a second chance at life.
