The Linking Angels
“And you shall make two golden cherubim; you shall make them of hammered work, from the two ends of the ark cover.” (Shemot 25:18)
Among the various instructions provided for the assembling of the Mishkan in Parshat Terumah, the cherubim are quite an odd and ambiguous request. Rarely do they appear elsewhere in the Torah and never are these entities described clearly, other than their having wings and faces pointing towards the Aron…Continue

Life is a blessing.
It’s time to stop acting like it’s a curse.
It’s time to stop acting like it’s an obligation.
It’s time to treat it as it is, with all its mysteries and enigmas.
Tu Bishevat is here. Why do you want to help heal the planet? What pleasant memories flash across your mind at the mention of nature? Why are we all here? What are we living for?
A good friend of mine, once said, “Nature is human, with fears…Continue

They say the captain always goes down with his ship. But I know the truth. The ship went down with its captain. A brown mass plunged into the fiery depths of the sea.
The crystalline surface of the water sparkled as the ship sliced through its glasslike reflection, shattering it into jagged shards. The sails billowed furiously in the salty gusts of the wind and the Sun beamed down at her fellow…Continue

People's Climate March
I pull on my cap and volunteer shirt, walk to Columbus Circle Subway Station, all while simultaneously yawning. It's 7:30 in the morning. I'm already on duty.
As I gaze around, I glimpse passerby in absurd and fascinating costumes. A man or a sun, a man-sun strolls along. Someone with a pointed warlock hat- not really sure what he was supposed to be.
People are already here, committed to the act of defying climate…Continue

I am a new Earth Science teacher interested in getting my class involved in a stewardship project. Many of the groups I see advertised seem like they were active a few years ago. Also, I'm unsure how to tell what is going on in my area. Could someone assist me with site navigation?
Beams of blinding light flood through my open window, as birds chirp noisily in the distance. The neighbor’s dog yaps relentlessly. I hate that little yapper’s pathetic bark almost as much I loathe touching the subway rail. Don’t get me wrong, I like dogs, but this one is the devil in disguise.
Shuddering, I hastily slide my window shut, as a noise much more ferocious thunders from downstairs, vibrating the…Continue

i really really want to do a fund raiser for the environment yet i don't know what to do, i need help!!
When it comes to the environment, I love love love animals. Especially snakes, owls, bats, lizards, frogs and turtles. I work at a local park where I handle snakes and turtles and I absolutely love it. I have a lot of people that tell me that I'm nuts to like snakes. I have even been told that snakes deserve to be dead rather than alive. That comment completely floored me because snakes aren't here to hurt us, they're here to help us. And I wish more people realized how cool snakes are.…Continue
My group renovated the foundation of an old homesite in Cedar Falls Park, Chapel Hill. We dug out a pile of glass, rocks, and briars and turned a real eyesore into a historic site along a hiking trail. We found 10 one hundred year old glass marbles that kids used to play with who lived in the house, an old toy…Continue

Thanks to a bunch of boyscouts and other teen volunteers, Cedar Falls Park has its hiking trails marked appropriately. We pulled out 26 old posts and remarked the trails with Rhino marking system. It looks great. You can drive a Mack Truck over the sign posts, and they still stand straight and mighty. The posts were pulled out using a lever system and physics - an 8 foot post as a lever, 3 small cinder blocks as a fulcrum and a board to catch the lip of the post. These posts had been in…Continue
